Housing In Kalgoorlie
Finding a place to live in Kalgoorlie is a bit different from house hunting in a big city, but with the right approach, you’ll find something that suits your needs.
Renting in Kalgoorlie
If you’re renting, you’ll notice that options in Kalgoorlie lean heavily toward standalone homes, many with generous yards and pools, a bonus for families or anyone wanting more space. Rental prices are generally more affordable compared to Perth, though, like everywhere else in WA at the moment, they can be expensive and hard to come by.
In my experience, rental listings in Kalgoorlie move quickly, so it’s worth keeping an eye on the rental section of Real Estate Australia and joining community Facebook groups where locals often share available properties. Go to as many home opens as possible and be prepared to pay around $800 a week for a 4-bedroom house with a pool.
Pro Tip: Use ChatGPT to help you write your application. The rental we ended up getting had 3 applicants, and I was so sure we weren’t going to get it, but I had spent tonnes of time making sure my application was really good so we sounded like the best people for the house, and I think it got us over the line!
Buying Property in Kalgoorlie
For those looking to buy, Kalgoorlie offers excellent value for money. The median house price is far below that of major cities ($380,000 at the end of 2024), making it an attractive option for first-time buyers or families wanting to settle down. Popular neighborhoods like Lamington and Hannans are known for their strong sense of community and proximity to schools, making them favorites among locals.
One challenge is that the housing market here can be influenced by the mining industry’s ups and downs, so it’s a good idea to research property values over time, but ultimately it will be likely cheaper to pay a mortgage then to pay rent, even if the value of your house doesn’t go up much.
Pro Tip: The temperatures can be extreme in Kalgoorlie. Check for houses with good insulation, ducted air-con (called swampies to the locals), and a good wood fire or gas heater. If the house is made from wood, check for a termite inspection history, and the last time it was re-stumped. Also check the quality of the roof, and factor into your offer if big jobs like these will likely need doing.
What to Expect from Housing in Kalgoorlie
Kalgoorlie homes reflect the city’s mining heritage, with many classic Australian-style houses built on larger lots. You’ll also find newer developments offering modern amenities, especially in suburbs like Somerville, Broadwood and Karkurla.
However, don’t be surprised if older homes need a little TLC. You can generally get an idea by the price of the house, as to how much repair work it might need, as sometimes the real estate photos can be a little misleading.
Your Next Steps
- Check out local real estate websites like Real Estate Australia for the latest listings.
- Reach out to Kalgoorlie-based agents who can provide insight into specific neighborhoods.
- Go to as many home opens as you possibly can, you’ll soon get a clear idea of what you want and where.
- If you’re renting, start your search early and be persistant as listings tend to go quickly.
- Consider joining local Facebook groups to hear about housing opportunities before they hit the market, and don’t be afraid to ask around, or on Facebook for what you’re after, as people are very willing to help!

Job Market And Career Opportunities in Kalgoorlie
Kalgoorlie’s job market is booming, with many opportunities across many sectors. While mining is the backbone of the local economy, the town’s demand for skilled workers extends far beyond the Super Pit, or any of the dozens of surrounding mines. Whether you’re in trades, professional services, or hospitality, if you have a warm body you have a job! You only need to check Seek to see this is true!
Top Industries
Mining remains the dominant industry in Kalgoorlie, with companies like Northern Star at Super Pit/KCGM offering a steady stream of jobs. However, Northern Star actually has multiple mine sites around Kalgoorlie, aboveground and below, and companies like Evolution Mining and Gold Fields also have work at multiple mine sites. There is also loads of companies that provide services to the mines and who are good employers, and also many other related and independent industries.
Pro Tip: If you’re new to mining, look into short trade certifications or safety courses that can help you get your foot in the door. Even entry-level roles can lead to solid career growth.
Other Industries in Kalgoorlie
While mining is king, Kalgoorlie’s economy is more diverse than it gets credit for. Key opportunities also exist in:
- Education and Healthcare: With a growing population, teachers, nurses, and medical staff are always in demand. The local hospital and several schools regularly post openings for skilled professionals.
- Retail and Hospitality: The city serves as a hub for the region, so retail stores, restaurants, and cafes often hire. It’s a great starting point if you’re looking for flexible or part-time work.
- Trades and Services: Plumbers, builders, and electricians are highly valued here, as are roles in logistics and transportation to support the mining supply chain.
Real Talk: If you’re relocating as a family, it’s worth having one partner either secure work before the move, or come to Kalgoorlie first and get a job, before the rest of the family comes. Personally, we found the transition much smoother once a stable income was locked in.
Finding Work in Kalgoorlie
Kalgoorlie’s unemployment rate is impressively low – just 2.1% as of June 2024 -making it a promising place for job seekers. Many employers offer competitive salaries and benefits, especially for roles tied to the mining industry.
How to Find a Job in Kalgoorlie:
- Search Online Job Boards: Websites like SEEK list hundreds of positions across industries, but you can also try these Facebook Groups: Kalgoorlie Jobs or Kalgoorlie Job Search/Looking for Work. As well as this, you could also join any generic Kalgoorlie community Facebook Group and post your skills and what you’re looking for, and see who responds.
- Network Locally: Connections matter here. Attend local events or join sports clubs and community groups to expand your opportunities. As much as I hate to suggest it, perhaps you could even go to the pub after 5pm, and see if there is any locals there to chat to, who might know someone who might know something! Just ask around as much as you can.
- Contact Employers Directly: Reach out to mining companies and local businesses, as many positions are filled through word-of-mouth. I would also go directly to the Employers’ websites, as lots of the bigger companies have their own “Work With Us” page, where you can join their mailing list and be emailed any job opportunities that come up.
- Visit Businesses in Person: Almost every single business in town is looking for people, honestly. Just go for a drive in West Kalgoorlie (the industrial area) and look yourself at how many businesses have signs out that say “Staff Wanted.” Print off a whole stack of resumes, and drop them off anywhere that you think would be suitable. You never know where it may lead.
- Go For the Reliables: Bunnings, Coles, Woolworths, Kmart, Hungry Jacks, McDonalds and KFC are some of the conglomerates that have stores in Kalgoorlie. It may not be your dream job, but trust me, it might be the foot in the door you need to find something amazing! You need to apply online for most of these jobs, so check their respective websites.
- Upskill: If you have the time and money, look into local training programs to gain certifications like a White Card, Working at Heights, Forklift License, a HR/MR/HC licenses, First Aid Certificate, or Machinery Licences (water cart, dump truck driver, operators etc.). If you’re applying for mines, they won’t let you onto mines without a white card or First Aid Certificate, and they won’t pay for a new starter to do these, so best to have these done first before even trying. In other industries, these things are less important, but some of them would still make your resume look good, depending what you’re applying for!
- Consider DIDO From Kalgoorlie: Consider DIDO (drive-in-drive-out) roles from Kalgoorlie if you’re open to higher pay and the unique lifestyle it requires. This is where you would stay on a camp while you are working somewhere up to 4 hours or so from Kalgoorlie, and in your time off, live in Kalgoorlie. Not ideal if you have a family, but it’s a start.
- Stay Clean: If you’re applying for a minesite job, they will make you have a DAS (Drug and Alcohol Screen). This will check if you haven’t taken any drugs (including marijuana) in the last 30-60 days, or alcohol that hasn’t been cleared from your system. Minesites do daily alcohol testing, and random drug testing too, so if this is something you indulge in, stop, or your mining career will be very short lived.

Schools And Education In Kalgoorlie
Finding the right school is often one of the biggest priorities for families moving to a new town, and Kalgoorlie offers solid options for education at all levels. Whether you’re relocating with little ones just starting school or teenagers preparing for their next steps, you’ll find a mix of public and private schools with supportive learning environments.
Primary Schools
Kalgoorlie has several well-regarded primary schools, making it easy to find a fit that works for your child. Popular public options include Kalgoorlie Primary School and Hannans Primary School, both praised by parents for their friendly teachers and strong community feel.
If you’re considering private education, Goldfields Baptist College is a standout choice, offering smaller class sizes and a focus on values-based learning. St Joseph Catholic Primary School and St Mary’s Catholic Primary School are other options.
**Be aware that to be able to attend any of the public primary schools, you will need to live in the zone for that school, so this may factor in to where you choose to live.
Secondary Schools
For older kids, Kalgoorlie offers a mix of public and private secondary schools, including:
- Kalgoorlie-Boulder Community High School: The main public secondary school, with programs tailored to both academic and vocational pathways.
- John Paul College: A private Catholic school known for its strong focus on academics and extracurricular activities. Many families choose JPC for its supportive approach to preparing students for university or trade pathways.
A unique advantage of living in Kalgoorlie is the Goldfields Trade Training Centre, which gives high school students hands-on training in industries like mining, construction, and hospitality. If your teenager is considering a trade career, this resource can set them up with valuable skills and certifications before they even graduate.
Early Childhood Education and Childcare
If you have younger children, Kalgoorlie has plenty of childcare and early education centers to choose from. Centers like Great Beginnings Kalgoorlie and One Tree Community Services come highly recommended for their caring staff and focus on play-based learning.
Spaces can fill up quickly, though, so it’s worth booking tours and securing a spot as soon as you know you’re moving.
Tertiary Education and Vocational Training
While Kalgoorlie isn’t home to a full-scale university, it punches above its weight when it comes to practical education. The Curtin University WA School of Mines (WASM) is a huge draw for students interested in mining and engineering careers. It’s recognized globally for its hands-on courses, and its presence in town reflects Kalgoorlie’s importance to the resources industry.
For vocational training, TAFE Kalgoorlie offers courses in areas like trades, hospitality, and business, giving students pathways to employment in high-demand industries.
Your Next Steps
- Visit Schools: Reach out to schools for tours to get a feel for their environment and teaching approach.
- Ask Locals: Community Facebook groups are a great way to hear firsthand feedback from parents.
- Secure Childcare Early: If you have little ones, get on waitlists for childcare as soon as possible.
- Explore Vocational Options: For older kids, look into the Goldfields Trade Training Centre or TAFE Kalgoorlie for career-focused pathways.

It’s perfect if you’re dreaming of more space for kids, pets, or hobbies without the financial stress of city living.

Evenings in Kalgoorlie are peaceful. Whether you’re enjoying a barbecue in your backyard, watching the sunset over the bush, or spending quality time with family, it’s easy to appreciate the simpler things in life.
5. The Big Skies and Outback Adventures
Kalgoorlie’s location in the heart of the Goldfields means stunning natural beauty is right on your doorstep. The endless outback skies, wide open plains, and dramatic sunsets are unlike anything you’ll see in a major city.
When you need a weekend escape, you’ll find plenty of outdoor adventures nearby, from camping and hiking to exploring ghost towns and goldfields. The best part? You rarely have to battle crowds to enjoy it.
